You simply have to stick the bag in the fridge (or freezer) for a while to activate the insulation. I was very impressed by the size and quality of these bags. Due to some of the other reviews I was worried I would not be able to fit my tupperware medium deep square rock n serve containers in it plus the rest of my lunch. You do have to tip them slightly to get them in but they fit just fine. I did have to lay my water bottle on it's side (due to the height) but there was still plenty of room left over. I fit lunch, my water and a lot of snacks no problem. The bag is well worth the price as they are really well-made. Sturdy handles and good zippers-it does not feel cheap. I do put a thin ice pack in the bottom to keep things extra cold. I'm not sure the outside will be as easy to clean as it stated since it is nice fabric but you never know. I haven't gotten mine dirty yet. The inside is that "tin foil looking" insulation that wipes off well. Over all I find it is a great bag.
